hidenoriharata.jpg

HIDENORI HARATA

kiyotakahorii.jpg

KIYOTAKA HORII

asakasekiguchi.png

ASAKA SEKIGUCHI

Kumagaya Special Needs School)

JASCD Spring Conference 2017

This year's Spring Conference will offer two separate areas of focus.

Registration Now Open!

Reading Writing Project

Teaching Writing as a Transformative Force & Raising the Level of Close Reading

  • Improve demonstration methods and ability to write demonstration texts
  • Study the latest research on increasing engagement and analytical reading
  • Leave with an assessment toolkit that will change your perception of writing

ESL/ELL

Collaborating for Inclusion: Transforming the Conversation

  • Examine collaboration & inclusion through academic language
  • Establish norms and structures to support inclusion
  • Leave with tools to deepen co-teaching relationships

Jon Nordmeyer - ESL/ELL Specialist

JonNordmeyer.png

Jon Nordmeyer is an ESL/ELL specialist with an MA in TESOL and is the International Programs Director at WIDA, a research center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been an international educator and consultant for 25 years, teaching at international schools in Quito, The Hague, Taipei, Istanbul, Shanghai and Bangkok. Jon believes English language learners are often associated with their limitations rather than their potential. How can we transform the conversation from focusing on what ELLs can’t do, to building on what they can do? This requires a shift from viewing multilingualism as a problem, to multilingualism as a right, and eventually as a valuable resource for any classroom.

Dr. Mary Ehrenworth - Teachers’ College Reading Writing Project and Common Core Expert

DrMaryEhrenworth.jpg

Dr. Mary Ehrenworth is Deputy Director of the Reading and Writing Project, a not-for-profit think tank at Columbia University. Mary has taught writing around the globe, in one-room classrooms with no water or electricity, and classrooms filled with digital technology. Mary will share a vision of how to focus your teaching of writing so that you turn writing into a transformative force, and ensure that each and every student becomes powerful at narrative, information, and argument writing. Mary will also help you make your teaching of writing more streamlined and efficient, so that
you spend less time planning, and have more time to talk to kids about their writing. You’ll have a chance to work on a toolkit for conferring, so that you are more prepared for conferences and small groups.

Using Technology with Research-based Instructional Strategies

usingtech.png

While there have been numerous frameworks over the years that help educators to evaluate the level of technology integration, these tools often do not contain enough guidance to help teachers think about how to instruct with new tools. With access to overwhelming numbers of websites, apps, and resources, it’s easy to descend into doing tech “for tech’s sake” or to simply eschew technology altogether as an instructional tool. The research-based strategies behind McREL International’s meta-analyses help teachers to think about the learning activities in which they wish to engage their students. Based upon the 2nd editions of Classroom Instruction that Works (Dean, Hubbell, Pitler, & Stone, 2012) and Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works (Pitler, Hubbell, & Kuhn, 2012), this one-day workshop will give teachers an overview of the research then will learn a variety of tools that help them to integrate strong instructional strategies.

Buffet style lunch will be provided and an informal 'unconferencing' discussion group will meet directly after the event in the hotel lounge.

Participants will be required to:

  1. Bring an Internet-connected device.
  2. Carry their passport with them at all times.
